John James Audubon Bridge

One can see from the photographs that the John James Audubon Bridge is a structure that is stark and beautiful in its simplicity. Cost of the bridge, a cable-stayed design, was $409,000,000 in 2011. It is only two lanes wide.

From the bridge, there is nothing much to be seen except for sugarcane plantations and a few cotton fields thrown in for good measure.

Heretofore the only way to cross the Mighty Mississippi between Natchez, Mississippi and Baron Rouge, Louisiana … a distance of approximately 80 miles … was via ferry. The bridge is nearly 13,000 feet long and the river is approximately  one mile wide.
